The Best Time to Become an Enrolled Agent is Now.

With the passing of the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, many tax laws will be changing.  The tax law changes will not be represented on the Enrolled Agent Special Enrollment Exams until next year.  If you can find the time and motivation to complete your Enrolled Agent exams between May 1, 2018 — February 28, 2019, all references on the examination will be to the Internal Revenue Code, forms and publications, as amended through December 31, 2017.  That means you will be tested on tax law that you have been using and applying.  While everyone still needs to prepare for the upcoming tax year and the changes that are coming with it, completing your Enrolled Agent License this year will be slightly easier than if you wait until next year to become an enrolled agent. 

The enrolled agent special enrollment exams have gone up in price, and that trend will continue so long as the IRS’ budget continues to get cut annually.  There is a $181.94 fee per part paid at the time of appointment scheduling. The test fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.  If you fail the test, you have to pay and take it again.  On top of that, they have also reduced the amount of time in which you can complete the series.  Federal Direct encourages all Enrolled Agent Candidates to finish your series before the onset of tax season.
