Provisional PTINs:

available through 4/18/2012.  This means that you WILL be able to get a PTIN prior to completing the preparers examination up to this date.  If you already have a PTIN, you will need to renew that PTIN for a fee of $64.25 after October 15th, 2011 for the coming tax season.  You will be able to preparer 2011 tax returns starting this January with a provisional PTIN.

Official PTIN and Registered Tax Return Preparer:

This status is relating to PTINs issued after 4/18/2012, or renewal of provisional PTIN after 10/15/2012 for 2013 tax season.  PTIN application or renewal fee is $64.25.  Fingerprinting and a background check will be required; the fee is not determined yet for this but is estimated to be between $60 and $90.  Enrolled Agents, CPAs, and Attorneys do not have to be fingerprinted.  Applicants for an Official PTIN will have to take and pass the Registered Tax preparer examination.  The fee for this examination has not yet been determined but is estimated at $100 to $120.  There will also be a 15 hour Continuing Education requirement consisting of ( 2 hours of ethics, 3 hours of tax law changes, 10 hours of Federal tax topics.  Preparers will be required to renew their PTINs annually between 10/15 and 12/31 for the following tax seasons.  These renewals will be at a rate of $64.25.
