Gov to Allow “Unbanked” to Buy Insurance with Prepaid Debit Cards

Remember that report stating that folks with out bank accounts were going to face a ton of problems? Well, that crisis has been avoided. The Obama administration said Wednesday that there will be a rule preventing health plans from not accommodating households that do not have traditional bank accounts.

An estimated 8.5 million people without health coverage would have difficulty getting tax credits to help them buy insurance on marketplaces that open Oct. 1, if health plans barred certain payment methods. The “unbanked” will now be able to use all payment methods aside from cash money. Prepaid debit cards, money orders, and cashiers checks and paper checks will be acceptable to buy health insurance. Direct debit will also be an option.

Pony up for health insurance or pay up a penalty for not having health insurance. Your call. Payment option issue no longer an issue. Your move, America.
