IRS Shutting Down MeF E-File System on November 18th, 2023: File Your Taxes Early!

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be shutting down its Modernized e-File (MeF) system on November 18th, 2023, for annual maintenance. This means that taxpayers will not be able to e-file their individual income tax returns during this time.

The MeF system is used by both taxpayers and tax preparers to e-file individual income tax returns. It is a more secure and efficient way to file taxes than paper filing, and it offers a number of benefits, such as faster processing times and lower refund fees.

The IRS has not yet announced when the MeF system will reopen, but it is expected to be back online in early 2024. In the meantime, taxpayers who have not yet filed their individual income tax returns will need to file them on paper.

If you choose to file your taxes on paper, be sure to allow plenty of time for your return to be processed. The IRS recommends that you mail your return at least six weeks before the tax filing deadline.
