Many individual tax identification numbers will expire at the end of 2018 unless renewed. Those not used on a return in any of the last three years expire on Dec. 31. Also expiring at year-end are ITINs with middle digits of 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 81 or 82. Affected individuals may renew their ITINs by filing Form W-7, marking the renewal box and submitting original identifying documents such s birth certificates or passports. The Service says it will review the records and return the documents within 60 days. Alternatively, people who need to renew can work with a certified acceptance agent or schedule an appointment at one of the IRS’s designated Taxpayer Assistance Centers.
Remember that your clients need to have their renewal confirmation before e-filing in January to prevent any refund delay or reductions. Additionally, ITIN holding clients need to have their returns accepted by the end of peak season in order to get their maximum refund possible.
