Tax Preparer Registration

Online PTIN Directories: Verify Your Tax Pro

All paid tax preparers are required by the IRS to have a valid PTIN (Preparer’s Tax Identification Number). These numbers are used by the IRS to identify who is the tax preparer on a return. This information, and so much more, is available to the public (due to the Freedom of Information Act) on the IRS website.  These lists provide the tax pro name, relevant designation (if applicable), telephone number and address. Because this information in available to the public, it has been used to create both an official online directory managed by the Treasury and many unofficial tax preparer directories by for-profit businesses. These unofficial online PTIN directories may not contain accurate or up-to-date information on the tax preparer.

By using the RPO’s official online directory, taxpayers or interested parties can locate credentialed tax professionals near them such as Enrolled Agents or tax preparers who have completed the Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP).  If you are already engaging with a professional tax preparer or enrolled agent, you can verify their status using the same directory. CPA and attorney designations are self-reported and then verified by the IRS.
