There are more than 11 million taxpayers who have requested an automatic six-month extension this year and have yet to file. October 15 is the deadline, but there are exceptions. There are always exceptions. Are you serving in Iraq or Afghanistan or a combat zone? If so, you can stop reading, but the majority of you need to pay heed. You can and will be assessed a penalty for late filing if you do not make the deadline. The IRS urges you to E-file, and since the E-file mandate was enacted, this should not be difficult to do. Also, a recent tax court case ruled that relying on a preparer to timely file your return is not reason enough to waive the penalty. You need to make sure it is in, e-file, postmarked, etc. by the 15th!
