When Does My Tax Preparer PTIN Expire?

Tax Preparers were required to get a Preparer Tax Identification Number last tax season.  Those PTINs were initially scheduled to expire one year, to the day, from when they were issued.  That time frame has been changed by the IRS, now all PTINs will expire on 12/31 of the following year.  This translates to anyone who received a PTIN for the 2010 tax year (Jan 1, 2011 – Dec 31, 2011); those PTINs will be active through 12/31/2011.  Everyone will need to re-register their PTIN again before preparing any 2011 returns this coming January, and the IRS has stated that the online reregistration process will become available mid October, 2011.  For any questions on PTIN registration and reregistration please contact your Federal Direct account representative.
